A figure described entirely by the water falling around it.
Synthetic image / subtraction
One hard overhead source, one wall of rain, one silhouette that is never actually lit. The subject of the frame is the weather; the man is the hole it falls around.
The discipline is subtraction. Every light we added made the rain quieter, so in the end there is one, and it is behind everything.
Rain is only visible if something behind it is brighter than it is.
Frontal light lit the man and killed the rain. A portrait of someone who happens to be wet.
Pulled too far the other way. Subtraction has a floor, and this frame is under it.
One frame. It is the reference we use whenever a scene has to be carried by atmosphere instead of a subject.
